Winter Eye Health
Your eyes are typically well suited for most types of weather including the winter months. Your eyelashes, eyelids, and tears provide a natural means of protection for most conditions. But, extreme cold, prolonged exposure, or extended sun glare from the snow can be harmful.
Symptoms may include:
Eye pain
Loss of vision
Blurred or decreased vision
Double vision
Extreme light sensitivity (photophobia)
If any of these symptoms occur, go inside to warm up your eyes. If symptoms persist, seek medical attention.
Prevention Individuals exposed to high winds, cold weather, or during activities such as working outside or having fun in the snow should wear the proper eye protection such as sunglasses or goggles. Make sure these sunglasses or goggles have 100% UVA/UVB protection.
